If I could, I would

This is George W. Bush responding on the issue of regulating high gasoline prices in the United States.

With extreme greed for profit and the Iraqi oil to boot, he just wouldn’t.

State Responsibility

April 26th, 2005 by mamangrey

"We have to explain to them that our obligation is to our citizens. We are a sovereign country and we have to protect our citizens." Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo to the US government on repatriating Filipino workers from Iraq

Obligation. Their obligation that we are all obliged to pay. At 25 US dollars a contract for a non-functional card, their new OWWA Omnibus Policies will ensure this obligation is realized.

No wonder hundreds are still stranded. Others going home empty-handed. Others unaware of a state responsible for them.

Can press statements actually help?

Thinning (not political)

April 21st, 2005 by mamangrey

Two days ago, after my haircut, I realized that my hair is gradually thinning. I am still a bit rattled by that discovered fact and now have plunged into a minute-long discourse on why I am experiencing.

As to the why:

a. That is a recessive gene from my mother that only I in the family have. All my brothers and my father, who at his age of 80, still have strong locks of hair. No signs of scalp lines showing. While mine is like a grassfield undergoing kaingin. And all my mother’s brothers have shining, shimmering foreheads extending to their napes. Waaaah, don’t want this.

b. The Indonesian water system is polluted. But then, Hong Kong water is more polluted, with all its chemicals, toxins and granite treatment (the last one is just a theory). Like this cute French photographer from AFP, all colleagues I know, all of whome have stayed here for more than 5 years, have horn patches on their foreheads. Horn patches are those areas in your head that normally had hair but are now barren. If it’s water, then my pH balance shampoo will not work at all. As if shampoos are there to keep my hair attached to my head.

c. I eat too much sweets, fries and bakwa (those grilled thin meats popular and best in Malaysia).

d. I preoccupy myself with this when I am supposed to be doing more important and urgent work.

bubble bursts

April 20th, 2005 by mamangrey

natuwa ako kasi nakakaaddict pagpuputuk-putukin - either isa-isa o maramihan.

Hidup Indonesia

April 20th, 2005 by mamangrey

As roughly sweet as martabak manis. As fiery hot as sambal. As pituresque as Puncak. As vibrant as their 10000 rupiah white shirts.

Right now, all I can talk about is Indonesia, its sceneries, the batik, the delicious food and the people.

I have not seen and experienced a country as beautifully and as agitatingly as I had my own.

Magkukwento ako tungkol sa Indonesia, my second kampung halaman.
